ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHIC CHANGES DURING NITROUS OXIDE–OXYGEN–RELAXANT ANAESTHESIA IN CARDIAC PATIENTS

Abstract
Continuous e.c.g. tracings have been recorded during nitrous oxide-oxygen-relaxant anaesthesia in twenty-six patients with mitral valvular disease or constrictive pericarditis. Forty-six per cent of the patients showed no significant changes. The cardiac irregularities observed in the remaining patients were principally represented by supraventricular tachycardia, accentuation of ST depression and accentuation or development of ventricular premature beats. These changes usually occurred during routine measures such as tracheal intubation and/or pharyngeal packing.
