CLINICAL CALORIMETRY

Abstract
In this paper there will be presented the results of calorimetric observations made in a case of chronic lymphatic leukemia, both before and after vigorous Roentgen-ray therapy, and also after exposure to radium. The basal metabolism in leukemia will be discussed and the effect of irradiation thereon. The literature contains but few observations of this sort. Those by Grafe,1Magnus-Levy,2Kraus,3and Bohland4being the only ones that we have found suitable for comparison with cur own case. By referring to Table 1, in which the experiments of these several authors are collected,5it will be seen that in both forms of leukemia there is invariably a marked rise in the basal metabolism expressed in terms of body surface area. This is found in both types about equally, the average increase over the normal in eight cases of lymphatic leukemia being 52 per cent.,
