Interlayer coupling in ferromagnetic semiconductor superlattices

Abstract
We develop a mean-field theory for spatially inhomogeneous states of diluted magnetic semiconductors with carrier-induced ferromagnetism. The theory is applied to structures with alternating ferromagnetic and paramagnetic layers. The sign of the exchange coupling between ferromagnetic layers oscillates as a function of the free-carrier density and the thickness of the paramagnetic layer, as in the analogous metallic multilayers, opening up the possibility of semiconductor giant-magnetoresistance systems with designed properties.
