Abstract
26 strains of anaerobic streptococci isolated from parturient and post-abortal women were investigated as to their cultural characteristics, the fermentation of trehalose and sorbitol, the hydrolysis of Na hippurate, the final pH in dextrose broth, their growth in media containing bile, and the fermentation reactions exhibited with certain carbohydrates. Reciprocal precipitin tests, utilizing extracts of all the strains with antisera prepared against all the strains by immunization of rabbits, were also performed. No correlation between any 2 of the biochemical characteristics, or between the biochemical and serological reactions, significant enough to be useful in classifying the organisms, was found. Certain antigens are present in common, and further work along serological lines may ultimately enable classification. Evidence of a relationship between certain anaerobic streptococci and hemolytic streptococci of Groups A, B and C, is presented.
