Abstract
An improved procedure for synthesis of DL-4-Hydroxy-3-methoxymandelic Acid (DL-Vanillyl-mandelic Acid, VMA) entails slow addition of an ice-cold, aqueous solution of glyoxylic acid to an ice-cold alkaline solution of guaiacol, with efficient mechanical stirring. This one-step condensation procedure provides VMA in 68-75 percent yield. Keywords
