Abstract
Osteomyelitis caused by type 14 Diplococcuspneumoniae developed in a 14-month-old boy with sickle cell anemia. An occasional polymor phonuclear leukocyte containing diplococci was found in the peripheral blood smear. The pres ence of Howell-Jolly bodies in the patient's erythrocytes suggested splenic hypofunction. It thus appears that some patients with sickle cell anemia and hyposplenism are capable of phago cytosis of pneumococci. Keywords
