Evaluation of the Maturity of Fetal Lungs: A Simplified, Inexpensive Modification of Amniotic Fluid Analysis by Thin-layer Chromatography

Abstract
A modification of a more difficult thin-layer chromatographic procedure for analysis of amniotic fluid to evaluate maturity of fetal lungs is presented. Silica gel on polyethylene terephthalate is substituted for silica gel H on glass plates, and the need for sulfuric acid visualization is eliminated by the use of iodine staining. Fifty amniotic fluid specimens were evaluated using these modifications. This method proved to be accurate, reliable, and in-expensive.
