Abstract
Presentation of Case First admission. A fifty-three-year-old man was admitted to the hospital because of pain in the knee.For the previous six years he had had episodes of low-back pain. Three years before entry, while stepping off a curb, he suddenly experienced severe lumbar pain. At the advice of his physician he reduced his weight from 335 to 275 pounds. X-ray treatment of the lumbar region was without benefit. Eleven months before admission, in the course of other studies, an x-ray film revealed a fracture of the left hip.
