Abstract
Modest extensions of in vitro survival time of human fibroblasts (WI-38 strain), compared to control cultures, were observed when various membrane-active compounds were added to the culture medium. Four control cultures survived 49 to 50 divisions. Cultures supplemented during the last several passes with sodium hypophosphite, polyvinylpyrrolidone, or hydrocortisone survived 53 to 54 divisions. Other substances tested (butylated hydroxytoluene, vitamin E, aspirin, meclofenoxate, ATP, and inositol) exhibited either no effects or mildly toxic effects.
