Abstract
S-functions, as developed by Littlewood, are reviewed with the aim of simplifying the algebra of continuous groups. S-function division is defined and the theory developed to a stage where a computer programme has been written that performs Kronecker products, branching rules, plethysms on two variables, and inner products of the symmetric groupKeywords
