Abstract
The dominant feature of the 1958–59 polar-night circulation was the intense warm anticyclone which developed over the Aleutian-Alaskan area in October. The anticyclone persisted throughout the winter acting as an anchor ridge for the strong baroclinic waves in the polar-night stream. The character of the middle stratospheric domain and some features of the baroclinic waves are presented. The October anticyclogenesis which occurred with only moderate stratospheric baroclinity is related to tropospheric cyclogenesis by synoptic techniques and Fourier analysis.
