Abstract
Orthodontic patients frequently suffer soreness and irritation of the oral mucosa during the initial period of appliance wear. A large variety of pharmaceutical preparations is available for topical application to relieve the symptoms. 68 patients with newly fitted fixed appliances recorded their experience of soreness and irritation for a four week period and reported by daily record the effects of a 0.15 per cent solution of benzydamine hydrochloride solution. The groups taking the active and placebo solutions reported almost identical degrees of discomfort during the experimental period. The active solution was ineffective in reducing the incidence, duration and severity of soreness during the experimental period.
