Abstract
Numerous studies in several countries attest to the high prevalence of intestinal symptoms in the community. Such cross-sectional studies underestimate the lifetime prevalence which probably approaches 100%, according to prospective studies. Psychological factors certainly determine consulting behaviour, but no more so than in organic disease. They also seem to be associated with the occurrence or, at least, the recollection of symptoms in non-consulters.Keywords
