Study of shadow region of obstacles by ultrasonic diffraction for NDE

Abstract
In an attempt to invert ultrasonic scattering data for the characterization of cracks, a theory has been formulated [P. A. Doyle, J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 13, 163–77 (1980)] which considers the caustic pattern created by diffraction from the crack edge. Model experiments were carried out to observe acoustical caustics in the shadow of obstacles, using a 250-μm-diam miniature probe as a detector. Qualitative agreement has been obtained between theory and experiment. [This work has been supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.]
