CO-TRANSDUCTION OF THE GENETIC DETERMINANTS OF SYNTHESIS OF PENICILLINASE AND METHIONINE IN STAPHYLOCOCCUS AUREUS

Abstract
Six penicillin-sensitive, methionine-dependent mutants of Staphylococcus aureus were competent recipients of the genetic determinants of penicillinase production and methionine synthesis. Co-transduction of the two characteristics was observed. Transductional analyses indicated that there was a close association between the extrachromosomal determinant of penicillinase production and the locus controlling the formation of cystathionine. Based on the experimental evidence, it was concluded that the penicillinase determinant may be an episome.
