Abstract
Ovarian weight increased approximately 10-fold in hypophysectomized rats receiving PMS, vaginal cornification occurred, but mammary growth was absent. Hypophysectomized rats receving PMS, thyroxine and cortisone showed increased ovarian weight, vaginal cornification, growth of end buds in the mammary glands and increased weight of heart ventricles. PMS, insulin and cortisone increased ovarian weight, there were numerous side buds and end buds and a few alveolar lobules in the mammary glands, and the body and liver weights were increased. When PMS, thyroxine, insulin and cortisone were combined, the ovarian weight increase was less but the mammary gland growth was more extensive. These rats increased in length, weight and both liver and heart ventricle weights were close to intact controls. The results supported the view that the growth of the mammary gland is dependent on the metabolic state of the individual.
