OVARIAN INHIBITION BY A SINUS-GLAND PRINCIPLE IN THE FIDDLER CRAB

Abstract
There is a greatly accelerated rate of ovarian growth of adult fiddler crabs following removal of the eyes talks. The oocytes increase greatly in size and the ovary undergoes the same color change from light pink to deep purple-red that is observed during normal ovarian growth. The ovaries in eye-stalkless crabs increased 5-fold in wt. during a 30-day period at a time when almost no growth was observed in normal controls. Eyestalkless crabs, into the abdomens of which were implanted sinus glands, showed no accelerated growth.
