Abstract
The conventional definition of sliding hiatal hernia is revised and misconceptions about the anatomy of this area are discussed. It is emphasized that the roentgen appearance variously designated as a patulous cardia, chalasia, widening of the hiatus, malformation of the cardia and fundus of the stomach (malposition cardio-tubérositaire) is, in fact, evidence of a sliding hiatal hernia and is not purely functional in origin.
