Abstract
Sex plays a fundamentally different role in the lives of women than it does in the lives of men. A partial explanation of this may be that men are sexually more condi tionable by their environment. Men and women also attach different meanings to sex. Not only is sex a more important determinant in a man's decision to marry, but also it is a more important factor in his evaluation of his marriage. Sexual behavior and sexual values are derivative for women. Emotional factors are more responsible for a woman's satisfaction with her marriage. These factors are irrelevant, however, for the highly segregated marriages of the lower class. The role of parents in shaping the adult sexual behavior of their children is not clear. The only apparent, important considerations are their provision of the socioeconomic and religious backgrounds for the development of sexual attitudes and behavior.
