Abstract
The heads of 10 day old Holtzman albino rats were irradiated with a single massive dose of 2000 R. This resulted in the complete arrest of root formation in the molar teeth and temporary arrest of tooth formation in the incisors. The rootless molars and the non-growing incisors erupted into the oral cavity. Molars and incisors erupted without pulpal proliferation indicating that it is not essential to tooth eruption. The connective tissue fibers of the molar follicular sac demonstrated changes in cell and fiber size and number and orientation which were interpreted as growth of the follicle. These changes were correlated with tooth eruption indicating that eruption results growth of the follicular sac.
