Abstract
The biochemistry and metabolism of glucose, fructose, maltose, sorbitol, xylitol and glycerol was discussed in relation to their use in parenteral nutrition for the post-surgical patient. The endocrine factors regulating glucose metabolism and the ability of every cell to metabolize glucose, the main energy source in the human body, were mentioned. Keywords
