Elsewhere in this issue of the Journal, Drs. Fishbane and Starfield offer us some new data comparing the care of children given by general practitioners and by pediatricians in a number of ways.1 Their article is important because of its timeliness.The harsh economic realities of the 1980s are forcing Americans to take a searching look at how much we spend, and whom we spend it on, in many areas of social need.
