Matching fibres for low loss coupling into fibre amplifiers

Abstract
Fibre amplifier gain may be greatly increased by reducing the field spot size. However, the resulting mismatch between the fields in the amplifier and standard fibre leads to large splicing losses which reduce the amplifier efficiency. We show theoretically that total splice loss may be greatly reduced by using one or more intermediate fibres.
