Abstract
33 early (before kindergarten) reading children and 33 matched control children were given a battery of tests and their parents were interviewed about 47 items dealing with demography, parenting practices, and child characteristics. Results showed that early readers were superior to controls on measures of conservation, on two measures from the Illinois Test of Psycho-linguistics, and on one measure of creativity. Parental interview data suggested that parents' achievement orientation and the environment of the home were more important than the child's interest as motivation for early reading. It was concluded that the presence of operativity in children, combined with high achievement motivation on the part of their parents, facilitates the attainment of reading skills at an early age. Keywords
