Tetany of the Newborn Associated with Maternal Parathyroid Adenoma

Abstract
THERE have been a few cases recorded in which infants born to mothers with parathyroid adenoma have shown tetany early in life. The first observation of this was made by Friderichsen,1 , 2 who reported in 1938 the occurrence of hypocalcemic tetany in a breast-fed infant, five months of age, whose diet had recently been supplemented with cow's milk. The infant recovered when calcium was added to the diet, but the serum calcium level did not return to normal until two months later. The mother showed hypercalcemia, renal calcification and the bone changes of hyperparathyroidism. Removal of a parathyroid adenoma was followed . . .
