Abstract
In experiments in which a number between 1 and 10 was arbitrarily assigned to a list of words and the subject had to guess which and was informed whether the response was correct or not, high recall of correct responses was discovered. In experiments previously published rewarded responses were not recalled more frequently than wrong ones. The difference in outcome was achieved by a shift in instructions concerning the continued correctness of responses. Data concerning the repetition of wrong responses also are reported.
