Abstract
HEPATOCELLULAR carcinoma (HCC) is a major cause of death worldwide, with a high incidence in Asia and South Africa.1 More than 80% of patients with HCC have liver cirrhosis, particularly related to chronic viral hepatitis types B and C.2 Although surgical resection of the tumor is considered the best option,3 it is possible in only a minority of patients owing to impaired functional reserve of the liver and multicentricity. To overcome the limited application of resection, other treatment modalities have been investigated.4,5Keywords
