Abstract
This paper contrasts traditional theory with observed flow patterns and develops explanations based on density variation, spill-over or rapid change of curvature. Impellers modified in the light of these explanations have shown efficiency improvements of 1–2 per cent. Some successes with flow visualization are described. Keywords
