Abstract
The RPA integral equation for the plasmons in a double-step surface potential model is solved numerically for zero surface wavevector. The frequencies and character of the localized surface modes are determined and found to agree roughly with experimental data on metal overlayers. However, the low-lying loss mode recently found by Anderson et al. (1974) cannot be related to a free-electron-like collective mode. Keywords
