Abstract
Dextran splitting bacteria were shown to be present in enormous numbers in the stools of healthy persons. All the strains isolated were Gram-negative, non-sporulating rods that required anaerobic conditions for growth and evidently belonged to the Bacteroides group. Fluids of cultures grown with dextran contained soluble dextran splitting enzymes whose mode of action is being investigated. Keywords
