Self-generated rotation in a magnetic levitator

Abstract
The paper describes a levitator, using a proximity height detector, in which the supporting DC electromagnet provides a torque about the vertical axis, so that the floating object rotates continuously. The main properties of the system are explained qualitatively as a form of reluctance-motor action, due to the shaping of the magnetic field interacting with fluctuations superimposed on the magnet current.
