Abstract
A group of rats was first subjected to a series of presentations of a tone followed by food. Then the rats were conditioned to press a lever with food reinforcement. During a test period which followed, the rate of lever pressing was markedly increased by presentation of the tone and was depressed during silent intervals, although the response had not previously been associated with the tone in any way. Keywords
