Abstract
Recent research into optical amplifiers and their future applications is described, focusing on the erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The characteristics of the amplifiers are briefly described, and their use in long-haul transmission systems, undersea transmission systems, optical frequency-division-multiplexed systems, subscriber loops, and functional circuits is examined. Their potential role in broadband communication networks is briefly considered. Keywords
