Abstract
The effect of acute starvation and dehydration in rats, on "takes" of Walker 256 cells following their subcutaneous injection has been investigated. Our results indicate that starvation and dehydration for 48 hr. do not increase susceptibility of the rat to subcutaneous inoculation of Walker tumor, but if starvation is continued for 7 days there is increase in percentage "takes" of the tumor as compared to normal healthy animals. The percentage "take" after inoculation of rats starved for 7 days, with Walker cells, was 80% compared to 57% in the controls (x2 = 5.007). There is also an increase in "takes" of implanted tumor cells in young rats 28 days of age compared to more mature rats. The percentage "take" after inoculation of young rats weighing 85 g was 94% compared to 68 to 73% in the mature rats (x2 = 4.97).Keywords
