The absorption-line spectrum of Q 1246 - 057

Abstract
We have obtained high-resolution spectra at high signal to noise ratios of the optically selected QSO Q 1246 – 057 (zem = 2.22). This object has a very broad-lined absorption system at zabs = 2.05, indicating ejection of absorbing material at velocities υ ∼ 0.05 c (Osmer & Smith). No obvious signs of sharp-lined structure were found in the absorption troughs, although a number of sharp-lined absorption systems ranging in redshift from zabs = 0.6399 to 2.2123 are present. It appears that the zabs = 2.2123 system either is at a considerable distance from the QSO and outside the outflow material, or was formed subsequent to it.
