Abstract
Nearly one third of the diagnoses of regional enteritis are made during exploratory laparotomy in acute abdominal disease. It has been contended that regional enteritis does not lead to perforations into the free peritoneal cavity. Four cases reported here, with two others reported previously, show that such perforations sometimes do occur. In each of the six cases, the treatment has been different; a fact which bespeaks the lack of familiarity with the problem. There were no deaths in this series, but since exploration is so common the surgeon should give some forethought to this potentially fatal complication. Keywords
