Spawning-stock biomass: A source of error in recruitment/stock relationships and management advice

Abstract
Theoretically, the relation between recruitment and stock is generally calculated in terms of recruitment and egg production. However, nearly all calculations in the literature are based on the relation between recruitment and spawning-stock biomass (SSB). The implications of basing recruitment/stock relationships on spawning-stock biomass are discussed in the context of a) the error induced by using SSB rather than egg production, b) the implications for recruitment/stock biology, and c) the development of management advice.
