Femtosecond solitary waves in optical fibres

Abstract
We present a theoretical calculation which shows that optical solitary waves can propagate in an optical fibre in the femiosecond regime. The optical fibre which can support such a wave must exhibit negative third-order dispersion (β0″/ω0β1). Use of these waves will further increase the bandwidth of optical fibre communication systems.
