Abstract
Bleeding of normal [female] canaries (Serinus canarius) at 1-, 3-, and 10-day intervals caused a reduction in the erythrocyte counts and hemoglobin concn. A 40-day interval between bleedings was sufficient to allow the blood to return to normal. The erythrocyte counts and Hb concn. responded inversely to the no. of parasites in the blood of canaries infected with P. rouxi. A decrease in erythrocytes was shown during the prepatent period. A "seasonal" increase in the blood components was observed during late Jan. and Feb. in both normal and parasitized birds. This increase was great enough in the case of the Hb to offset a recrudescence of the parasites occurring at that time. It is suggested that this seasonal increase may be correlated with the breeding season (increased functional activity of the gonads). A correlation between the amount of Hb and the relapse rate was observed.
