Supersonic hot-wire fluctuation data analysis with a conduction end-loss correction

Abstract
The interpretation of hot-wire fluctuation measurements in supersonic flows is complicated by the substantial portion of heat transfer from the wire due to conduction to the supports. A systematic approach to include the effects of this conduction end-loss in the decomposition of hot-wire voltage fluctuations into mass velocity ( rho u) and total temperature (T0) fluctuations is presented in this paper. A data reduction method is developed for constant-temperature hot-wire anemometers. The results of numerous fluctuation measurements at different locations in supersonic jets are presented. The reliability of the data reduction technique is evaluated by comparing the results (at identical flow field locations) of fluctuation measurements using hot-wires of different aspect ratios. A comparison of the results from the present technique and previous methods is also made.Keywords
