Abstract
The relative subjective intensities of typical representatives of the 4 primary tastes (sweet, salt, sour, and bitter) were estimated by the method of multiple pair comparison. The raw binary data were treated by a procedure analogous to quantal response bioassay, on the assumption that the psychometric function is a logistic. The method enables goodness-of-fit tests to be made and inter-subject differences to be checked. The mean results were: sucrose : sodium chloride : citric acid : quinine sulfate = 1:14:220:2300. The median concentration of sucrose in these trials was about 2%, and at that level the Weber fraction was about 1/2 for all 4 tastes.
