Abstract
Protection of rats against the lethal action of the new rodenticide, [alpha]-naphthylthiourea (ANTU) was obtained by adding either KI or Lugol''s soln. to the drinking water or diet. The intraperitoneal dose of ANTU required to kill 50% of a group of animals (LD-50) was about 7.0 mg./kg. for rats fed a synthetic stock diet. This value was not significantly different from the LD-50 of 6.5 mg./kg. for animals eating Purina Laboratory Chow for 3 wks. When animals consumed an avg. of 20.8 mg. I/kg, in a 1-2 day feeding period the LD-50 increased to 29 mg./kg. The LD-50 of ANTU for rats eating 44.8 mg. I/kg. in the same period was 46 mg./kg. The ability of animals to tolerate ANTU was directly proportional to the quantity of I consumed in a 1-2 day feeding period. Keywords
