Abstract
X-ray studies of 20 post-operative unilateral cleft palate''s showed marked differences in velar activity between cleft palate and normal subjects. The velo-pharyngeal opening during phonation of vowels was significantly greater in the cleft palate group. The anterior movement of the posterior pharyngeal wall was similar for both groups. Some of the cleft palate subjects approximated a velo-pharyngeal closure against adenoidal tissue. The cleft palate subjects used more vertical movements of the velum. Nasality in cleft palate patients is mainly related to the effectiveness of the velo-pharyngeal closure.
