Abstract
X-ray diffraction line broadening in magnesium oxide after neutron irradiation at 75—100°c has been investigated. Only slight broadening occurred for a neutron dose of 4·2 × 1019 nvt (> 1 Mev), whereas appreciable broadening was present for specimens irradiated to 2·1 × 1020nvt and 4·5 × 1020 nvt. At 2·1 × 1020 nvt all the observed broadening could be attributed to strain but a particle size contribution was present at 4·5 × 1020 nvt. The results are interpreted in terms of the formation of interstitial dislocation loops at doses above 1020nvt, At 2 × 1020nvt, the measured line breadths are in close agreement with those calculated using data from density measurements. With doses above 4 × 1020 nvt, interaction between dislocation loops leads to the formation of a structure similar to that of a cold-worked metal. Keywords
