Abstract
A series of tests were conducted, employing both sleeping and conscious subjects, in an attempt to find tests permitting quantitative evaluation of 2 aspects of normal uninterrupted sleep - depth of unconsciousness and degree of relaxation or lowering of metabolic activity. It appears that changes in depth of sleep can be adequately determined from periodic eeg records, while measurements of skin resistance or of muscle tension seem of little value. With respect to metabolic activity, tests on conscious subjects indicated that heart rate is closely related to over-all metabolism and that changes in metabolism over a fairly short period are followed by corresponding changes in toe temperature. Keywords
