Abstract
The paper suggests that some awareness of history and philosophy of science can, by enriching teachers' own background with insights into the nature of science, enhance their teaching and suggest new strategies. It is suggested that this paper be followed by a second one which considers in greater detail certain issues which are raised but not discussed in this paper, viz. controls in school biological experiments and the role of induction and deduction in the context of school science with special reference to biology.
