Flowing afterflow studies of gas phase magnesium ion chemistry

Abstract
Reaction rate constants have been measured at 300 K for Mg+ ions with O3, HNO3, H2O2, Cl2, CCl4, and Br2, for MgO+ ions with CO, NO, and O3, for MgOH+ ions with HNO3 and H2O2, for MgOD+ ions with D2O, and for MgCl+ ions with CCl4 and HNO3. MgOH+ ions react rapidly with HNO3 to produce NO2+ ions and Mg(OH)2 and hence MgOH+ ions cannot be expected to exist in the stratosphere where HNO3 is abundant. The observed exothermic reactions establish that 1.1<D(MgO+)<3.1 eV, and that the ionization potential of Mg(OH)2 is less than 10.2±0.6 eV and that ΔHf(CCl2 +)<284 kcal mol−1.
