Abstract
A nonlinear amplifying loop mirror has been turned into a laser by feedback of the output to the input through a fibre-pigtailed optical isolator. After some optimisation, pulses as short as 314 fs were produced. The pump powers are low enough that laser diodes could be used for pumping. Keywords
