Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia in an Adopted Vietnamese Infant

Abstract
A 7-month-old Vietnamese infant was adopted by an Albuquerque, NM, couple. When she arrived in the United States she was very malnourished and failed to thrive. A progressive interstitial pneumonia developed, with tachypnea, tachycardia, cyanosis, normal temperature, and no cough. Her condition was so critical by the time pneumocystosis was suspected that bronchoscopy or lung biopsy were considered too hazardous. Treatment with pentamidine isethionate and leucovorin calcium was begun, along with continued supportive therapy. The baby survived. During the acute phase, immunofluorescent antibody titer was 1:16; convalescent titer, 1:64. (JAMA230:1561-1563, 1974)
