Abstract
About 800 adult mosquitoes of the Anopheles maculipennis complex were collected in Finland. Their identity was ascertained by studying the adults with enzyme electrophoresis. Eggs were studied with light and scanning electron microscopy. The mosquitoes appeared to belong to 2 species, Anopheles messeae and An. bekemishevi. The distributions of the 2 species overlap widely, but An. messeae seems to be a southern species and An. beklemishevi a northern one. Species diagnostic differences were found in the allele frequencies of 2 enzyme loci, Hbdh and Sod-2. The differences noted in scanning electron microscopy of the eggs are also described. Keywords
